Trumpet the News

Hi ....

We're blowing our own trumpet in this edition of the Newsletter (as usual we hear you shout) ~ scroll down for more details! Also, whilst we're on our horn, a quick 'toot' for this Sunday's Harvest Auction, where produce given to St. James Church for the Harvest Festival will be auctioned off here at 'The Oak' with the proceeds going to the Church and local good causes ~ what could be better; why not warm the cockles of your heart with a double brandy (or two) and a donation to these worthy causes.

Our first news photo shows Stacy Hall (click on the photo to also see Rolly!) entertaining us with style and passion last month and drawing a good crowd to see the return of these two local favourites ~ thanks Rolly and Stacy! We also had our Hobson's Brewery Trip, and huddled amongst the vats and the pipes (dreaming about the next pint) whilst owner Nick educated us about all things brewing. Our third photo represents a departure for 'The Oak' ~ we have some original local art for sale on behalf of local Gretton artist Caroline Walters ~ our photo shows a detail from Caroline's line drawing. Click on the photo to see the framed picture. Where else can you buy original framed art for £20 ~ snap up an early Christmas present?!

Continuing with our tradition of live local entertainment we will be pleased to welcome local duo Nick and Felicity Jane aka 'Father of the Bride' to the pub on Friday 24th October. In November we're welcoming back our regular folk players John Shepherd, Ed Drury and friends for one of our fantastic 'Folk in the Oak' evenings.

Scared? You will be should you dare to come to our Spooky Halloween Disco. By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes ~ yep, it's another truly wicked night down at 'The Oak' ~ bring a friend; or leave with one ;-)

Too early to think about Christmas? Yes, we know, but we've been doing a lot of thinking to bring you the best Christmas Menus at great Value For Money. More details below ~ Christmas at 'The Oak' ~ it's traditional! Best wishes from ...

Going ... Going ... Harvest Auction !!

Come along to 'The Oak' and bid for the harvest fare - not only will you be getting first rate local produce, but also supporting good causes as the proceeds are split; with half going to St. James Church funds and half to local charities.

Father of the Bride

Father of the Bride
Friday 24th October from 9pm.

Father of the Bride is a rock and pop duo formed in 2006. Nick has performed in bands since his teenage years, notably show band ‘Absolute Beginners’ which boasted the late, great jazz pianist Andy Leake, and ‘Misdemeana’ with renowned local guitar hero Mark Williams, now with ‘The News’. Nick currently lists his occupations as Electronics Engineer and Wannabe Rock Star! His skills on guitar and keyboards are mixed with powerful vocals to produce a great sound. Felicity Jane turns out mostly to shake her maracas and tickle the odd ivory.

Inclusion is solely on merit, the recommendation of customers and in the case of The Good Beer Guide, CAMRA members.

So thank you to those who've put in a good word for us and we'll be striving to not only maintain but to improve our standards throughout the next year. Copies of the two new guides are available for browsing (but not for sale) in the bar.
