Halloween Capers

Hi ....

Hello, and welcome to another Newsletter. Despite the doom and gloom of the 'recession' we're still striving to bring you the best in quality and value here at 'The Royal Oak' and will be starting our Special Christmas Menu on Tuesday the 2nd. December. Our menu is detailed below and at £11.95 for a two course festive meal, or £13.95 for three courses; we believe you can't do better! Reservations are recommended for the festive season.

Our header photo was taken during the recent visit of The Wheatland and we're pleased to report that the meet was as popular as ever, perhaps even more so with a good number of riders and followers braving the crisp morning air, with wet conditions under hoof! See more photos in our feature, below.

Our first news photo shows Roy Davis and auctioneer Paul Stephens selling a bottle of Chunky Chutney ~ just one of the many lots at our recent Harvest Auction. The auction raised over £350 for the church and local charities ~ a big thank you to all those who supported it and to Paul for acting as Master of Ceremonies.

Other events from last month included Nick and Felicity Jane aka Father of the Bride who did a brilliant job of entertaining us and (news photo 3) spooky goings on at Halloween when Steve got to break in his new false teeth (... the fangs we do!). Talking of entertainment DON'T MISS this Friday night, when our regular group of folk musicians, John Shepherd, Ed Drury and friends are holding another 'Folk in the Oak' evening, from 9pm.

That's not all ~ we've got a great line-up for December with two Big Party Nights. On Christmas Eve we'll be ready wrapped and well stuffed to enjoy music from Rob Chapman ~ probably Rob's last gig at 'The Oak' as he's now concentrating on his magic act. He's an old Royal Oak favourite and we're sure that he'll be conjuring up a fantastic atmosphere. That's also what we're expecting on New Years Eve with the return of Rolly and Stacy. This local father and daughter duo had a rapturous reception on their last music evening and we're expecting bigger and better at our New Years Party. Hope to see you soon ...

'Folk in the Oak'
Friday 21st November from 9pm

Yet more musical shenanigans from our resident 'Folk in the Oakers' ~ John Shepherd, Ed Drury, Clare Drury, Laura Shepherd and their many friends. We're expecting a great atmosphere and even out-breaks of spontaneous dancing on our popular folk evening! Come along and join the FUN, with local musicians entertaining you the traditional way.

The Royal Oak was pleased to play host to 'The Wheatland' earlier this month. On a somewhat overcast but dry day we had a considerable number of both riders and followers for this traditional, country event. What a splendid sight they all made as the immaculately groomed horses gathered in front of the pub!

Here's a curious thing ...

Pub Sign 1 At first glance one might believe both sides of our pub sign depict the same picture ~ a pictorial representation of Charles II hiding in the Boscobel Oak. However, side by side, you can see that local artist Tony Sheppard has incorporated a fair amount of variation. In particular Tony, a keen gun antiquarian, has depicted two different types of rifle that were both in common use at that time. Click here or on either image for more details. Pub Sign 2
