As we're writing this Christmas Day is just one week away ~ where does the time go?! The pub is decorated up for Christmas, the fire is roaring and the festivities are underway. We're looking forward to seeing many of our friends in the pub over the holiday period, we're open every day (but not necessarily every evening ~ see our opening schedule below for further details). We've live entertainment on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve ~ more details on that below. Our first news photo this month harks back to when the Wheatland visited last month ~ we didn't have chance to publish this excellent view of the houndsmen, resplendent in their red jackets against the crisp November morning sky. If that's left you feeling a little chilly, our second photo is proof positive that it's not only our customers that appreciate our open fire. Here we see pub dog Rosie the lab and Dram the cat sneaking a warm by the fireside. Our third news photo shows our Dining Room, decked out and laid up for a Christmas Party Buffet (click on the photo to see the larger image). We can cater for up to forty in our dining room and are happy to book the room for the exclusive use of private parties at no additional cost. It's Party Time at 'The Oak' with live entertainment from Jay Merry on Christmas Eve and Rob Chapman on New Years Eve. We're expecting a lively time, so why not come and enjoy the party atmosphere. Admission is free (as always!) and the music will be starting around nine o'clock. If your idea of entertainment is more cerebral ~ join us for our Dominoes Knockout on Thursday the 27th. Pit your wits against our pub teams' players ~ whoever said they were unbeatable was, err, just wrong, actually! Finally, as we approach this festive season, we'd both like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Hope to see you soon, down at 'The Royal Oak' ...

Here's a curious thing ... We recently purchased an etching of 'The Oak' from the States, by artist Michael Bond - one of 200 printed. The curious thing is that the picture is a mirror image of that well known view seen from the Gretton Road. Out of interest we contacted the artist and had a reply from his wife Laura. It seems that Michael, an ex-pat working in the States, produces mainly for that market and didn't reverse the image when engraving the plate (the usual practice being to copy it via a mirror) - hence the print reversal! |
